Lytton is a city in Calhoun and Sac Counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 305 at the 2000 census.

Lytton is located at (42.424360, -94.859129).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), all of it land.

History

Lytton was named for the English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton.[2] The post office was established January 10, 1900.[3]

Demographics

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 305 people, 141 households, and 83 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,591.3 people per square mile (619.8/km²). There were 152 housing units at an average density of 793.1 per square mile (308.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population.

There were 141 households out of which 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% were non-families. 38.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,844, and the median income for a family was $31,667. Males had a median income of $26,477 versus $15,833 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,650. About 6.3% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.4% of those under the age of eighteen and 13.7% of those sixty five or over.
